Case Management: What Does It Look Like?

“I like the name, ‘Stop Soldier Suicide’, but what does your case management look like? What do you guys do?”

We don’t provide treatment, and we don’t provide counseling. We are not a crisis center, so I think it fair to wonder what exactly we do in our Resource Center. Here’s the answer: We connect Veterans and their families to local resources along a continuum of basic needs, treatment and therapy, personal growth, and empowerment. We stay connected with Veterans or their loved ones through our program of case management over a period of 2 years. We don’t wait for the Veteran to call us, we call them, but perhaps the best description of our case management comes from those individuals who perform this service.

This is the testimonial from Leigh (left) and Keyona (right) on a call we received recently:

“I received a call from a Veteran out of Virginia. He was feeling extremely depressed and stressed out from some ongoing hardships. He went on to state that he felt as though everyone around him would be happier if he were not alive. Following two tours in Iraq, he had been feeling isolated, different, and uncomfortable functioning in his day to day life. Up until he called into Stop Soldier Suicide he never believed the possibility that he could have PTS. He stated that he felt as though he was too intelligent to be labeled. He called because he realized his intelligence had nothing to do with his PTS.  As he continued, he told me he was feeling as though he had hit rock bottom. He couldn’t take it anymore. He shared with me  his plan for taking his life and how he would do it.”

“At that point in time I notified him of what we do and how he could help but that the type of help he needed would need to happen now. The veteran then stated he was not interested in talking to the crisis hotline but that he did want help and that he knew he needed help. At that point in time as I continued to speak with him, I had another case manager (Keyona) by my side find a local give an hour (GAH) counselor who was able to speak to the Veteran immediately. We proceeded with the warm hand over to the counselor and after following up with the Veteran later that day and everyday to the present, he is feeling much better. He is continuing to see the GAH counselor face to face and has hope for the future. He is thankful for the compassionate GAH counselor and that he is getting the help he needs for himself and his family.”
